Over half of the Defra pump-priming went to promote FHP in the beef and dairy sectors. Defra set up an industry partnership - the FHP Cattle Subgroup – to direct this work. Subgroup continues to be involved in FHP promotion (its members worked on the FHP exhibit at the Dairy Show and Livestock Event 2009). Defra is funding the maintenance of the group until March 2010 after which the industry-led Cattle Health and Welfare Council will take the reins of FHP promotion to the sector.

The Cattle initiative projects
As part of the 2006-08 pump-priming, Defra funded 27 projects to promote proactive FHP in England’s beef and dairy sectors. Mostly vet-led, these projects used workshops, demo farms, training and other methods to help farmers put FHP into practice. They generated case studies and evidence that FHP works, which was promoted more widely.
